Definition of Drain Field

Septic drain fields are subsurface septic systems that recycle human wastewater. Systems designed properly transmit and store the home’s effluent ( wastewater ) below the surface allowing soils along with microorganisms to clean the
wastewater before returning it back to the water cycle.

Purpose of Drain Field

The entire septic system serving your home performs as an onsite household sewage treatment system. The drain field keeps human waste below the ground away from human interaction which not only reduces the risk of human disease but
protects our fragile natural waterways by filtering harmful excessive nutrients such as excessive nitrogen.

Drain Field Design

Usually, the drain field will consist of three to five trenches that are 18-24 inches in depth, up to 100 foot long , with a perforated pipe in 12-18 inches deep gravel covered by 12 inches of soil. A drain field properly designed should distribute
wastewater over a large enough area to allow it to infiltrate into the soil for treatment. A distribution box buried underground connected to the septic tank is often used to ensure equal distribution of wastewater across the trenches.

Drain Field Soil

The soil serves as a natural filter and contains organisms that help treat the wastewater . The pathogens are destroyed not only by the natural filtering process of the soil but the microorganisms living in the soil. The drain field must be properly sized to the soil conditions at each particular location. The soil at each drain field site should receive a thorough examination , usually by the local environmental department or by a soil professional prior to installation.

Signs of Drain Field Failure

  • Slow Drains
  • Gurgling pipes
  • Sewage backups
  • Lush green grass over the drain field
  • Standing water or damp spots near the septic tank or in the drain field
  • Foul smelling odors at drain field along with soggy areas at drain field

Reasons Drain Fields Fail

  • Septic tank not properly emptied on routine schedule allowing solids to make it to the drain field causing premature failure.
  • Drain field soil erosion over time due to weather.
  • Driving over the drain field or parking over the drain field compacting soil and crushing leach lines.
  • Improper design and poor soil conditions also can cause premature failure.
  • Planting trees or shrubs in or near the drain field with invasion of roots into leach lines.
